1940 - The Original 16

Despite their back-up catcher Willard Hershberger killing himself after a tough loss and Ernie Lombardi spraining his ankle, the Reds held on to win the pennant. 40 year old Jimmie Wilson filled in for Lombardi and hit 353 in the series.

After watching his son, Bobo Newsome, win the first game for the Tigers, he died of a heart attack that night. Bucky Walters threw a 3 hitter to tie up the series in Cincinnati.

Going to Briggs field, the Tigers took 2 of 3. In Cincinnati, Bucky Walters shut -out the Tigers and hit a home run. Paul Derringer pitched the 7th game with 1 day of rest he held the Tigers to 1 run, giving the Reds the Championship.
