The American League was formed from the Western League of Professional
Baseball Clubs and became the American League in 1901. The Western League of Professional Baseball Clubs was originally formed
in 1893. The original franchises were Sioux City, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Milaukee, Minneapolis, Detroit, Grand Rapids and
Toledo. After the 1901 season, the owners disbanded three of the teams and expanded into traditional markets. At
that time, they renamed the league to the American League of Professional Baseball Clubs.
