August 1 - Nolan Ryan leads the majors with 239 KO's - Orioles' 4-2 victory over the Indians puts them in first after the Yankees are beat by the Red Sox 3-2, Fisk and Munson tossed after Munson is out on a suicide squeeze bunt, he came up swinging after the tag and both benches empty - Univac computer programer states 3-1 odds that Hank Aaron will eclipse the Babe this year

Aug 18 - Bowie Kuhn refuses to break tie on interleague play vote, stopping it - Inidans put Cy Young winner Gaylord Perry thru the waiver system, but deny that they are looking to trade him - Red Sox pull off 5 dp in a 8-5 victory over Royals - Reggie Jackson hits #30 - Stargell hits #35 - Gaylord Perry throws a 3 hit shut-out against the Indians

Aug 19 - Billy Martin, "they legalized the designated hitter so maybe they'll legalize the spitter.  They should because more and more pitchers are throwing it" - Knuckle baller, Wilbur Wood, is 20-18 and may become the first pitcher since Walter Johnson to win and lose 20 games in the same season, the "Big Train" went 25-20 in 1916

Aug 27 - Rangers' Jim Merritt fined for throwing a spitter - Orioles extend their winning streak to 14 games, longest in the majors since 1965 - After 7 failures, Wilbur Wood gets his 21st win - Lou Brock steals #50, making 9 straight years

Aug 28 - Hank Aaron hits #706 - Rangers snap Orioles win streak, McNally takes the loss after winning 17 consecutive decisons over the Rangers

Aug 29 - Davey Johnson hits HR #37 to lead the majors  

Sept 1 - Tigers' Manager Billy Martin suspended for 3 days for ordering his pitchers to throw spitters - Twins' Rod Carew raises his batting average to .354
